POSITION TITLE: Machinist/Tool

Shop/Quick Cycle – 2nd shift

REPORTS TO: Department
Head –Machine Shop/Quick Cycle

POSITION SUMMARY: Set up and operate a
variety of ma-chine tools to produce precision parts
and instruments. May also fabricate and modify
parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain
industrial machines, applying knowledge of
mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties,
layout, and machining procedures.


Functions within an ISO/Team environment

Responsible for reporting food safety issues to
personnel with authority to initiate action

Some CNC program editing required, occasional
program creation required using MasterCam

Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches,
models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to
determine materials required and machines to be
used to fabricate parts.

Calculate dimensions and tolerances using
knowledge of mathematics and instruments such
as micrometers and vernier calipers.

Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and
reference points on metal stock for machining.

Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes,
milling machine, and grinder, to machine parts,
and verifies conformance of machined parts to
specifications, specifically set up of Fadal 3 axis
vertical mill, some operation of Haas Lathe also

Lifts machined parts and positions and secures
parts on surface plate or worktable.

Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to
display placement of cuts.

Position and fasten workpieces.

Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the
machining process.

Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly
lubricated and cooled.

Measure, examine, and test completed units in
order to detect defects and ensure conformance to
specifications, using precision instruments such as

High school diploma / general education degree
GED is required. Minimum 6 months of trade
school, vocational education or work experience.
Journeyman’s preferred.

Should have good communication skills, be detail-
oriented, adaptable, cooperative and able to work
as part of a team.

applicable state and federal laws.

Licenses Required: None

Visual Acuity:
Near acuity and accommodation are required for
reading machine dial gauges, blueprints, and
precision measuring instruments used in the
inspection of parts.

Hearing Ability:
Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and
diagnose changes in order to take appropriate

Working Conditions:
Normally works in Machine Shop. Occasionally, the
employee is subject to:
- high noise levels from operating machines
- physical hazards from moving equipment and
machine parts
- breathing fumes, dust and mist
- skin exposure to oils and cutting fluid

Physical Demands:
The employee is required to:
- stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and
bend to the floor.
- exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally,
and/or exert up to 20 pounds of force
- may be required to lift up to 100 pounds

Pay Range: $16-$19 to start
