JVS Career Technical High School

The Lorain County JVS is a cooperative effort among 13 participating school districts in Lorain County to offer quality career-technical programs to students.

Lorain County JVS offers over 30 two-year programs to students from the following school districts: Amherst, Avon, Avon Lake, Clearview, Columbia, Elyria, Firelands, Keystone, Midview, North Ridgeville, Oberlin, Sheffield-Sheffield Lake and Wellington.

Most of the programs offered are two years in length. Students from the above mentioned school districts would attend the JVS during their junior and senior years of high school. Students can earn up to 7 credits each year.

Two-year programs are available in the following program academies: Building Trades, Business & Marketing, Culinary, Manufacturing & Pre-Engineering, Transportation, and Service.

At the JVS, programs are grouped by Academy. An academy is a grouping of occupations from one or more industries that share common skill requirements. One of the major goals of the Academy structure is to give all students a wide range of experiences to prepare them for entry into the world of work.

Students in an Academy take integrated academics in math, science and English that relate to what they are learning in their career-technical lab. They also have an opportunity to participate in work-based learning experiences in local industries and businesses. The Academy concept allows students more flexibility and options when preparing for a career.

At the Lorain County JVS students receive individualized, hands-on learning experiences in their chosen career fields. Students are taught job skills on modern equipment with an emphasis on the technical approach to learning. The JVS philosophy emphasizes strengthening work ethics, and linking skilled individuals with the business and industrial community through job placement.

The JVS student concept is enriched through a well balanced program of academics, work-based learning experiences and youth club activities.

Students are encouraged to base their career decisions on firsthand personal information and are invited to visit the JVS during Sophomore Tour Days or the annual JVS Open House. Dates for these events can be found under the school calendar on this web site.
