JVS Blood Drives Net Student Scholarships
Allied Health Science seniors Madalyn East (Columbia) and Julia Smith (Firelands) run the blood drive table at the fall event

    April 27, 2018

JVS students and staff completed three blood drives during the 2017/18 school year and helped LifeShare Community Blood Services collect 179 units of blood.

"This is a wonderful community service that helps meet Lorain County’s blood supply need," commented Susan Wallace, Allied Health Sciences Instructor and Blood Drive Coordinator.

According to Robert Furlong, LifeShare Blood Services Donor Recruitment Representative, Lorain County JVS and other local high schools, are critical donor sources for the county.

LifeShare will award one $500 scholarship to JVS for every 25 units of blood collected.  "This year, the LifeShare Scholarship total is $3,500 and will be awarded to seniors graduating this year" stated Wallace.

Each donor received a t-shirt from LifeShare and this year, courtesy of the Lorain County JVS PTA, each donor received a red rose during the February drive. The Allied Health Science program provided cookies and pizza for two of the drives, as an added incentive to donate.

Additionally, seniors who made four donations of blood earned red donor honor cords to be worn at the Lorain County JVS Senior Recognition Ceremony and their associate school graduations.
