| Welding and Fabrication Students Design Equipment for New Lab

From left: Mike Warren (Elyria), Aaron Septaric (Amherst), Matt Berry (Wellington), Vilma Selage (Columbia). | August 18, 2008 -- Lorain County JVS Welding and Fabrication students played an important role in the design of key equipment for a new welding lab currently being planned for the JVS.
During the design process, welding instructor Mark Schreiber realized that the mounting of the wire-feed systems, which are designed to dispense welding wire at precise lengths and rates, would have to be changed.
“Unfortunately,” stated Schreiber, “when we looked for a wire-feed system with right-hand mount, we realized there wasn’t a company out there that made one.”
“That’s where the students’ input came in,” continued Schreiber. “The students disassembled the feed system, and devised a way to remount the spool and drive system on the opposite side, solving the problem. They worked closely with industry representatives Andy Mulroy from Miller Electric and Regis Holland from Wolfenden Industries.
Additionally, continued Schreiber, “as the new systems come in, our students fabricate the brackets needed to mount them.”
“This was an example of career-technical education at its finest,” stated Superintendent William Aubuchon. “Students were presented with a ‘real-world’ problem and used team work and critical thinking skills to solve it.”
