JVS Inducts National Technical Honor Society Members

JVS Offers Free Summer Career Camp for Students

The JVS is offering a free, summer career exploration camp for students entering the 9th and 10th grades from the following school districts: Amherst, Avon, Avon Lake, Clearview, Columbia, Elyria, Firelands, Keystone, Midview, North Ridgeville, Oberlin, Sheffield-Sheffield Lake and Wellington.

Those of us who are a little rusty with our Algebra may need explanation.  “Pi” is the symbol that represents the number that begins as “3.14” and continues to infinity.  That’s the reason March 14 (3.14) was chosen for “Pi Day”.

Vendors Invited to Career Expo for Building Trades Students

The Building Trades Academy is extending an invitation to any vendor who would like to participate in the student Building Trades Career Expo on Friday, May 13th, from 10am-2pm at the JVS.  This student event precedes The North Coast Building Industry Association Home Show, being held at the JVS on Saturday, May 14, from 10am-5pm.

Early Childhood Education Alum is Director of Linden at Wesleyan Childcare Center

Dana Trent is reaching for the stars. Three stars, to be exact.  “My goal is to achieve a three star rating for Linden (at) Wesleyan,” said Trent, director of Child Enrichment Services – Linden at Wesleyan and a 2006 graduate of the JVS Early Childhood Education Program.

Trent became director, in 2014, after working as a preschool teacher and child care manager at Wesleyan for a little over a year.

Help the JVS Win the Lorain County Buckle-Up Bowl Competition!!

Year-end graduations, celebrations, and proms always provide an opportunity to remind high school students to drive safely. Each spring, the JVS, along with high schools across Lorain County, partner with the Lorain County Safe Community Coalition to raise awareness of the life-saving power of buckling up during the annual Buckle-Up Bowl Competition. Follow our social media channels during the week of April 25th to help watch the unique activities and events we will be doing at the JVS to encourage and reward safe driving practices among our students. Also watch for and "like" a special “JVS Students Buckle Up” video produced by our students that will be posted to our Facebook Page.  We want your help to be named the "Buckle-Up Bowl" Contest winner for 2016!

Auto Technology Students Excel at the I-X Piston Power Show

Students from the Auto Technology program recently competed at the I-X Piston Power Show at the I-X Center in Cleveland. Tyler Yarsky and Greg Ford beat out sixteen other teams and were awarded over $5,000 in scholarships from the Ohio Technical College and Snap-On Tools. Spring Has Arrived! JVS Greenhouse to Open on April 25th

The JVS Greenhouse will be open for spring plant sales beginning on Monday, April 25, 2016. Normal operating hours are Monday through Friday, from 8am-11am, and noon-1:30pm on school days. The Greenhouse will also be open on Saturday, May 7th from 8am-12pm for Mother’s Day plant sales.

Marketing Students Excel at District DECA Competition

I recently had the opportunity to be part of a team of Lorain County JVS administrators, teachers and staff at a workshop offered by the Lorain County Urban League. The topic – Hidden Bias. The speaker from the Kirwan Institute at The Ohio State University shared research and facilitated activities that exposed potential blind spots in our respective organizations. She challenged us all to examine and reflect on those stories in our past that shape the way we interact in the present. It was eye-opening and insightful to learn more about how interactions, events and conversations influence our perceptions and choices, completely without our knowledge. We all do it – not necessarily with any malice, and it does encompass both favorable and unfavorable assessments.

Adult Cosmetology Students Study Anatomy for State Boards

There were some pretty funky pictures being drawn in the JVS Adult Career Center's Cosmetology Program recently. Second year students were reviewing their anatomy chapter by drawing their inside body parts on long pieces of paper and labeling all the parts. A fun way to help remember anatomy for state board testing coming up soon for the students in Columbus.

Culinary Academy Students Receive High Honors at FCCLA Regional Rally
Gold Medal Culinary Team: William Saki, Madeline Marinelli, Lauren Bascone

Students from the Culinary Arts Academy competed at the Regional Family Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) event in February held at Lorain County Community College. JVS Students Obtain State FFA Degrees
FFA Members Receiving State Degrees

Seven members of the JVS FFA Chapter will receive their State Degrees on May 6 in Columbus, Ohio.  The State FFA Degree is the 2nd highest award a FFA member can obtain.
