Early Childhood Education Students Raise Funds for Downs Syndrome Organization

Buddy Walk to benefit for The Up Side of Downs

Students in the junior Early Childhood Education Program (ECE) have chosen a special service project to support and raise funds for “The Up Side of Downs (USOD)”, a non-profit organization that provides support, education, and advocacy for people with Down Syndrome, their families and communities in 16 counties in Northeast Ohio.

One of the most recent fundraisers was a “Buddy Walk”.  Early Childhood Education students took the preschoolers on an exciting walk inside the 10 acre JVS campus participating in a variety of fun events along the way like an egg on a spoon relay, corn hole, and a balance beam walk.  The preschoolers’ family members pledged money for each step their child took.  This activity, along with several other fundraisers throughout the school year, has raised a total of $1,246.

Kiley Smith (Wellington) and Ja’Terra Patton (Midview) presented this project as a Chapter Service Project at the State FCCLA Leadership Conference in Columbus. They focused on how the organization makes an impact in the communities it serves and on the teaching profession.
