As a JVS student, parent, alumnus, community member or business partner, this newsletter is designed to keep you informed about the events and activities happening at the JVS. We will also share stories about many of our successful JVS students and graduates.

North Coast BIA Home Show is at the JVS on Saturday, May 14

The North Coast BIA Home Show will take place at the JVS on Saturday, May 14, from 10am-5pm and is free to the public.

The NCBIA will have an area for crafters and direct sales vendors. A 6 foot table (or display area if you are bringing your own) is available for $35. Contact the BIA for reservations at (440) 934-1090.

JVS Offers Free Summer Career Camp for Students
Students getting some experience in the Industrial Electricity Lab at last year's ExCEL Career Camp at the JVS.

The JVS is offering a free, summer career exploration camp for students entering the 9th and 10th grades from the following school districts: Amherst, Avon, Avon Lake, Clearview, Columbia, Elyria, Firelands, Keystone, Midview, North Ridgeville, Oberlin, Sheffield-Sheffield Lake and Wellington.

Buckle-Up Bowl Week a Huge Success
Deputy Tony Pluta helps JVS Preschoolers practice buckling up.

The Buckle-Up Bowl was a huge success. The week was spent promoting safe driving habits throughout the building and on our social media channels. The Buckle-Up Bowl happens every year, at high schools across Lorain County, who partner with the Lorain County Safe Community Coalition to promote the event.

No Bones About It, Adult Cosmetology Program Has the Right Makeup

Ashley Morris loves her cosmetologist job at Belleza Salon & Spa in Lorain, but she is even more excited about becoming Belleza’s new manager.  “That’s the beauty of the cosmetology industry, you can be as successful as you want to be, go as far as you want,” said Morris, 28, who graduated from the  Adult Career Center’s Cosmetology program in 2008.

Engineering Students Connect With Industry Professionals
PLTW students Jake Hendricks, Jared Kitinoja, Mike Kolodka and Josh Brown, all from Avon.

It’s important to connect Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering students with industry professionals and one recent opportunity to do this was at the 2016 Microscopy Society of North East Ohio (MSNO) meeting at Lorain County Community College. Society members are associated with local universities, research hospitals and commercial industry, and represent a diverse set of disciplines in the biological and physical sciences.

The Buckeye Room Restaurant, operated by senior culinary arts students, is switching up the way it’s delivering its lunch service next year and it wants to give its many faithful customers some advance notice of the upcoming changes.

Superintendent's Message

This time of year is always bittersweet. As we celebrate the accomplishments of our students with senior recognition ceremonies, high school graduation, scholarship awards and job placement announcements, we also realize that we are saying goodbye to students who have joined us for their final years of high school and to others that have been here for their entire 4-year experience.

Blood Drives Raise Scholarship Funds for Graduating Seniors
Marcus Gilbert, a Commercial Truck Technology student from Wellington, donates blood.

Students, staff and family members donated 285 units of blood at three LifeShare Community Blood Services blood drives organized by the Allied Health Sciences (AHS) students at the Lorain County JVS this year.  As an incentive, LifeShare donates $500 to the JVS for every 35 units of blood collected.  These funds are used to award student scholarships.  There has been $4,000 in scholarship money raised through these efforts for the class of 2016.

Early Childhood Education Students Raise Funds for Downs Syndrome Organization
Buddy Walk to benefit for The Up Side of Downs

Students in the junior Early Childhood Education Program (ECE) have chosen a special service project to support and raise funds for “The Up Side of Downs (USOD)”, a non-profit organization that provides support, education, and advocacy for people with Down Syndrome, their families and communities in 16 counties in Northeast Ohio.

Adult Cosmetology Students are Rock Stars for Clean Water
Adult Cosmetology students at the Palace Theater

Students in the Adult Cosmetology Program participated in the recent “Rock for Water Recycled Fashion Show” at the Palace Theater in Lorain.

It was sponsored by David Anthony’s Salon and the Aveda Cosmetics Company.  Proceeds of the fashion show will be benefit The Sierra Club and The Black River Clean Up.  This has been an annual event for the past 6 years.
