JVS Monthly Update-June 2016

As a JVS student, parent, alumnus, community member or business partner, this newsletter is designed to keep you informed about the events and activities happening at the JVS. We will also share stories about many of our successful JVS students and graduates.

JVS Awards Scholarships to College Bound Seniors
Tyler Perry receives congratulations from instructors Holly Sofia and Susan Wallace.

The JVS Senior Recognition Ceremony was held at the Palace Theater on May 27. Three hundred and eighty four students received career-technical certifications in their career fields. Students were awarded $39,500 in local scholarships from the JVS Educational Foundation, JVS Teachers’ Association, JVS PTA, JVS Board of Education, Ross Transportation Services Inc., Medical Mutual of Ohio, KMU Trucking & Excavating and LifeShare Community Blood Services.

Additionally, JVS students receive thousands of dollars in scholarships for their performance at career-technical skill events. Although too numerous to mention every scholarship awarded, students earned more than $500,000 from outside organizations, colleges, and technical schools.

We Are Career Tech!

We are so proud of our 2012 JVS graduates Tyler Johnson (Precision Machine Technology Program) and Tyler Higginbotham (Computerized Design and Drafting) who were recently featured in the Action 19 News story about the manufacturing industry in Northeast Ohio.  Both are employees at Thogus Products in Avon Lake and have amazing careers after attending the JVS. Free Summer Career Camp is June 14-16

The JVS is offering a free, summer career exploration camp for students entering the 9th and 10th grades from the following school districts: Amherst, Avon, Avon Lake, Clearview, Columbia, Elyria, Firelands, Keystone, Midview, North Ridgeville, Oberlin, Sheffield-Sheffield Lake and Wellington.

Foreign Exchange Students Excel at the Lorain County JVS

Math instructor, Tamera Melnyk, is hosting two foreign exchange students that are just wrapping up their school year at the Lorain County JVS.

Thitaree Chaisomvit, from Thailand, is in the Bakery and Pastry Arts Program. Since her name is a little challenging to pronounce, she encourages her classmates to call her “Mook”, a nickname she brought with her from home.

Career Connections Academy Students Volunteer for Service Learning Experience

Students in the 9th and 10th grade Connections Academy spent a day doing community service throughout Lorain County in May.  Many non-profit organizations welcomed the students including: Oberlin Community Services, Common Ground, Second Harvest Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Firelands Boy Scout Reservation, and the Neighborhood Alliance Senior Center.

The JVS sent 21 students to the Special Olympics at Ely Stadium in Elyria in May. The students were from the Hospitality A & B Programs, and the Job Training Program.

The papers have been filled with the words, thoughts and ideas presented by graduation speakers including students, staff and guest presenters.  The words call for reflection and often celebration, but they also issue challenges and are aimed to inspire.  They always give me pause for thought.

Adult Career Center Cosmetology Students Headed to SkillsUSA National Competition in Louisville

Two students from the JVS Adult Career Center’s Cosmetology Program took Gold Medals at the recent SkillsUSA Competition in Columbus.  Both students will advance to the national leg of the competition to be held in Louisville, Kentucky in June.

EMC Precision Machining recognized employee Sarah Grieve, from the Lorain County JVS Precision Machine Technology Program, for her success at the State SkillsUSA Competition. Sarah, of Elyria, received a 4th place award in the CNC Turning event.

JVS Adult Career Center's Managing Esthetician Program Begins July 18

The Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center is offering a new program for students interested in skin care. The Managing Esthetician Program is a 750 hour program that trains students to perform skin analysis, facials, waxing, and body treatments. Students will also be taught to use a variety of electrical machines and learn about salon management and retail sales.  In addition to career opportunities in salons and spas, students are also qualified to work for dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons. Upon course completion, students will be prepared to take the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology‘s exam to become a licensed esthetician. The exam fee is included in the tuition cost.

Culinary Students Receive High Honors at State FCCLA Competition

Landscape Students Plant Native Gardens on Ohio Turnpike
Adam Lafferty, of Elyria, leads the charge planting native plants along the Ohio Turnpike during Keep Ohio Beautiful Day.

Students from the Landscape and Greenhouse Management Program volunteered their talents during the Lorain County Pride Day by helping plant native pollinator gardens on both the Vermilion Valley and Middle Ridge Plaza sides of the Ohio Turnpike.

Allied Health Sciences Students Raise Funds for Operation Rescue - Update

Holly Sofia, an instructor in the Allied Health Sciences program attended an organizational meeting on May 22nd for Operation Rescue, Inc., a non-profit organization building homes for the impoverished people of El Salvador. Eight homes have been built to date and three homes are currently under construction.

The JVS Educational Foundation recently appointed three student representatives to their governing board at the May meeting.  Abi Hill (Career Explorations Program) from Firelands, Hailey Ferry (Career Readiness Program) from North Ridgeville, and Julia Spondike (Culinary Arts Program) from Ohio Virtual Academy.
