JVS Open House is Sunday, January 29th

The JVS Open House is on Sunday, January 29th from 1:30pm-3:30pm. The Open House is designed to give 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students and their parents an in-depth look at the 23 career-technical program options available for the 2017-2018 school year. Visitors can also learn about training options for adult students that offer valuable industry credentials.

Happy New Year to all of our corporate partners, parents, community members, staff and students! As your Superintendent of Lorain County JVS, I am extremely excited about the start of 2017 and all that a new year brings.

We would like to welcome new JVS Board of Education member Annie Carstarphen. Mrs. Carstarphen has been an Elyria School Board Member for three years and will join 12 other JVS board members representing their respective school districts. Carstarphen replaces Kathryn Karpus, who we would like to thank for her many years of service to Lorain County JVS.

JVS Engineering Students Visit NASA
Seniors in the PLTW Engineering program tour NASA Glenn Research Center

JVS Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Engineering students recently visited and toured the NASA Glenn Research Center. The tour was part of a Manufacturing Month event coordinated by MAGNET; the Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network.

Brian Iselin, PLTW Engineering Instructor, said “The students were able to see the type of work environment of a NASA engineer. They were also able to learn about the many different types of engineering and manufacturing jobs that are available at NASA.”

JVS Student Takes 3rd Place in Masonry Skills Competition
Jacob Ruth, JVS Masonry Trades senior from Clearview, takes home 3rd place in Masonry Skills Competition.

JVS Masonry Trades students recently attended the Ohio-Kentucky Administrative District Council for Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers 8th Annual Holiday Masonry Skills Competition. Jacob Ruth, Masonry Trades senior, took 3rd place in the senior division.

Commercial Truck Technology Juniors Gain Educational Insight

Commercial Truck Technology (CTT) juniors recently gained educational insight and received hands-on training from top professionals.

Thomas Bartfai, Hazardous Materials Specialist - Transportation Department, from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) spoke to the students about completing road side inspections, how the trucks are examined, how to check the tires, brakes, lights, etc. and what the PUCO is looking for while they are out making roadside calls.

Engineering Challenge Gets 'Sticky' for JVS Computerized Design and Drafting Students
Chris Weissling, junior from North Ridgeville, was the engineering challenge winner.

Computerized Design and Drafting students recently took part in a classroom engineering challenge called the Gumdrop Structure Design Challenge. Students had to use engineering skills, design criteria, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) connections for physics and shape comparisons with strength analysis.

JVS Graduate is 'Scanning the Past'
Keara scanning Grafton historical hard copies of Elementary School Departments.

In the spring of 2016, Keara Kilbane, then senior at Lorain County JVS from North Ridgeville High School, began scanning photographs, newspaper articles, advertisements, and other long-lost historical media to the digital database (Biblioboard) of the Grafton-Midview Public Library.

As part of the JVS programs, students who meet certain qualifications are eligible for a summer internship inviting the individual to grow their professional experience, meet corporate challenges, and build a network of contacts. Keara, who completed the two-year career technical program in Digital Media Arts (DMA) at the JVS, was an excellent choice for the Grafton digital project.
